WMMA Today gets you caught up on the week that was and the week that will be in women’s MMA.
The new Unified Women’s MMA Rankings for August were released and there was a major shakeup in the Bantamweight division as Miesha Tate not only wrestled away the title from Marloes Coenen, she also took her spot atop the rankings. In more bad news for the former Bantamweight Champion, Marloes Coenen appears to have been caught in the cross-fire in the on-going battle between Strikeforce/Zuffa and Golden Glory as she, Valentijn Overeem and John Einemo (UFC) were all cut. The announcement came just days after the promotion had released Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion, Alistair Overeem.
(8-5) Maria Elisabete Tavares defeated Luciana Pereira via TKO (Doctor Stoppage) in round two at Shooto: Brazil 24.
(8-6) Karen “9mm” Ousey out-gunned fellow Muay Thai specialist Anna Zuchelli via majority decision in an exciting three round war at UCMMA 22: Warrior Creed. Both fghters were making their pro MMA debuts. Due to an injury to Celine Haga, her bout against Michelle Tyler was canceled.
(8-12) Sarah D’Alelio meets 9th ranked Featherweight, Ronda Rousey at Strikeforce Challengers 18 in Las Vegas, NV. This event will be televised LIVE on Showtime starting at 11pm EST.
(8-13) 8th ranked Strawweight, Angelica Chavez battles Diane Rael at MMA Fight Pit: “Genesis” in Albuquerque, NM. This event also features many former UFC and WEC veterans, and will be available on PPV for $30.
(8-13) Angela Magana takes on Avery Vilche in a 120-pound catchweight affair at Clash in the Rockies: “The New Generation” at the Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio, CO.
