WMMA Today gets you caught up on the week that was and the week that will be in women’s MMA.
Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion and #1 ranked, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos announced that she has re-signed with Strikeforce. No official statement from Strikeforce as of yet, but according to Santos’ website, the deal is for one year; financial terms were not disclosed.
Former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion and #2 ranked, Marloes Coenen announced that she has signed a three fight non-exclusive deal with Blackeye Promotions. Coenen was recently released from Strikeforce after a business dispute between Zuffa and the Golden Glory camp. She is expected to make her promotional debut in February 2012.
Aug 26 – At Deep 55: “Impact” in Tokyo, Japan, Amanda Lucas (2-1) made her return to the ring after a twenty-two month layoff and dominated Hikaru Shinohara (6-8). Lucas took Shinohara down and worked her over with ground-n-pound before securing an armbar and winning via technical submission when Shinohara’s corner threw in the towel. To say that Shinohara wasn’t pleased, might be an understatement.

Aug 27 – Sara McMann (4-0) showcased her superior wrestling and improved striking skills to defeat Raquel Pa’aluhi (3-2) via keylock at 2:53 of round three at ProElite: “Arlovski vs Lopez”. This was by far McMann’s best performance as she continues her climb up the rankings of the Bantamweight division.

Sept 3 – Multi-time kickboxing champion and undefeated MMA fighter, Lena Ovchynnikova (7-0) returns to MMA after a two-year layoff to battle fellow kickboxing champion, Eugenia Kostina (0-0) at the President’s Cup in Mariupol, Ukraine.
Sept 4 – 4th ranked Featherweight, Rin Nakai (10-0) battles UK’s Danielle West (3-2) and Naoko Omuro (11-8-3) faces off with Kayo Nagayasu (7-6-2) at Pancrase: “Impressive Tour 9” and
Sept 4 – Sadae “Manhoef” Suzumura (1-1-1) meets “Bataco” (1-0) at Deep: “Osaka Impact”.
