WMMA Today gets you caught up on the week that was and the week that will be in women’s MMA.

—News—

–  In July, Miesha Tate would defeat Marloes Coenen to become the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion.  Wednesday night, she would pick up some additional hardware for her trophy case as she was awarded the “2011 Female Fighter of the Year” at this year’s Fighter’s Only World MMA Awards.  Tate beat out fellow Strikeforce fighters Sarah Kaufman and Ronda Rousey, as well as Marloes Coenen and Bellator’s Zoila Gurgel to receive the honor.

–  In a bout to determine the top pound-for-pound women’s boxer, it was Anne Sophie Mathis (26-1, 22 KOs) defeating Holly Holm (30-2-3) via KO in the seventh round. Holm more than held her own in the first four rounds, but by round five Mathis’ power shots began to find their mark. In the sixth, Mathis floored Holm with a furious barrage. Holm managed to get back to her feet and finish the round, however she would suffer more of the same in the seventh before Mathis sent her back to the canvas for good.
