Ronda Rousey armbars her way to Strikeforce Gold

“Women’s MMA Today” gets you caught up on the week that was and the week that will be in women’s MMA.

—Weekend Results—

3-3 In an open-weight contest in which she gave up over 50-pounds, 5th ranked Featherweight, Yana “Foxy” Kunitskaya (7-1) defeated former Thai boxing champion, Anna Melikhova (0-1) via unanimous decision at Lion Fights 1.

3-3 Due to injuries sustained in a car accident on the day of the fight to Angela Magana, her bout against 9th ranked Flyweight Carla Esparza at Pandemonium 6 was canceled.

3-3 The results from Jewels: “18th Ring” were as follows:
– Takayo Hashi (14-4) defeated Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi (15-10) via unanimous decision
– Emi “The Kamikaze Angel” Fujino (11-5) defeated Mika “Future Princess” Nagano (8-7) via unanimous decision
– Emi Tomimatsu (5-4) defeated Yuko “Amiba” Oya (6-3) via unanimous decision
– Ayame “Iris” Miura (5-0) defeated Celine “Hell-Girl” Haga (1-11) via keylock at 2:10 of round 2
– Mizuki Inoue (3-1) defeated Alexandra Chambers (2-1) via armbar at 4:32 of round 1

3-3 Prior to the championship bout at Strikeforce: “Tate vs Rousey”, 3rd ranked Bantamweight Sarah Kaufman (15-1) and 4th ranked Alexis “Ally-Gator” Davis (11-5) slugged it out to see who would earn the #1 contenders spot and after a 15-minute fight of the night performance, it was Kaufman taking the majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29).

A few hours later, number 2 ranked Featherweight, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (5-0) and number 1 ranked and defending champion, Miesha “Takedown” Tate (12-3) would take center stage and again, the ladies wouldn’t disappoint. In what was a very exciting and competitive round with a lot of back-n-forth action, it would be Rousey securing her patent armbar at 4:27 to become the new Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion.

3-9 Maiju “Mai” Kujala (6-3) meets undefeated Juliana Carneiro Lima (3-0) at Revolution Fighting Championship.

3-9 Rachel Kemker (0-1) and Jenna “Harley” Bernick (0-1) clash in a heavyweight bout at Steelfist Fight Night 6.

3-10 The second installment of Pink Fight MMA takes place in Brazil and features a main event of 8th ranked Bantamweight Vanessa Porto (13-4) vs opponent TBD. Also on the card, Aline Sério (2-2) vs Kalindra Faria (3-3), Michele Dayana (0-0) vs Jenifer Araujo (0-3), Rayane Fortinha (0-0) vs Ataide Girl (0-0), Kaka Naja (1-0) vs Chris Silva (0-0).

3-10 At “Army vs Marines 3”, Darla Harris (1-0) and Lisa Jeanson (1-1) battle in a strawweight match.

3-11 Lena “Hunter” Ovchynnikova (8-0) takes on Sanja Sucevic (2-1) at the inaugural Super Fight League event in India.

3-11 In Japan at Pancrase Progress Tour 3, Saori “Shooting Star” Ishioka (11-7) faces 10th ranked Flyweight ”Windy” Tomomi (17-13-1) and Shino VanHoose (2-0) meets Kimie “Sakura” Okada (0-5-1).
