Finally, “Alpha” Cat Zingano (9-0, 2-0 UFC) and bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (10-0, 4-0 UFC) will meet inside the Octagon. The bout is set for January 3rd and will serve as the co-main event at UFC 182: “Jones vs Cormier” in Las Vegas, Nevada.
After defeating Miesha Tate via TKO in April 2013, Zingano was set to coach opposite Rousey in ‘The Ultimate Fighter 18’, however, she was forced to withdraw from the show due to a serious knee injury. Personal tragedy would also keep Zingano sidelined until her return last month at UFC 178 where she reclaimed her number-one contender status via a come from behind TKO victory over Amanda Nunes.
Rousey has successfully defended her UFC championship four times, defeating Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann and most recently Alexis Davis via KO in just 16 seconds at UFC 175 in July. In her 10 victories, only Tate has made it past the first round, succumbing in round three to an armbar.
Once the bout had been announced, Rousey took to Instagram:
“Every ounce of respect I have for her is going to be poured into the effort to end her undefeated streak. Real champions don’t want belts, they want to test themselves against the best the world has to offer. On Jan 3rd two champions will be fighting and I’m going to show Cat what the best in the world is. I genuinely hope that Cat, the fans, and I all walk away unscathed and fulfilled that night. But fights are chaotic – you never know. 😉 I won’t say “good luck” but rather “good skill” to Cat. Get ready for the fight of your life.”
