UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey is set to make the next defence of her title on August 1st at UFC 190: “Rousey vs Correia” in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rousey meets outspoken and undefeated Brazilian contender Bethe “Pitbull” Correia in the night’s main event.

UFC officials formally announced the title fight on Friday following reports from Tatame and Globo. Rousey most recently submitted “Alpha” Cat Zingano in 14 seconds at UFC 184. Correia is 2-0 against Rousey’s “Four Horsewomen” stable, with wins over Jessamyn Duke and Shayna Baszler.

Rousey (11-0-0) enters the August title tilt as a massive favourite among oddsmakers, and the Olympic bronze medallist will have added motivation as she looks to avenge her fellow Horsewomen’s recent defeats. Now 5-0 inside the Octagon, Rousey has finished all but one of her UFC opponents inside the first round, with only rival Miesha “Cupcake” Tate surviving until round three. Her two most recent bouts, against Alexis “Ally-Gator” Davis and Zingano, lasted a combined time of just 30 seconds, and Rousey is regarded by some as the biggest star on the UFC’s roster today.

Correia (9-0-0) began her UFC career with a close decision win over veteran Julie “Fireball” Kedzie in late 2013, but it was her 2014 campaign that made fans take note of Correia’s talents. After defeating Duke in April, Correia set her sights on the rest of the “Four Horsewomen” faction, and she handily dispatched of Baszler at UFC 177 in August. Since then, Correia has made no secret of her desire to challenge the leader of the Horsewomen, Rousey, and she will look to score a major upset when she gets her championship shot in front of a partisan crowd in Brazil.

The Rousey-Correia victor is expected to move on to face the winner of a targeted June contender’s bout between the aforementioned Miesha Tate (16-5-0) and Jessica “Evil” Eye (11-2-0, 1 ND). An exact date, location and event for the Tate-Eye title eliminator has not yet been officially announced, but UFC President Dana White stated on Friday that the fight will take place sometime in June.

Rousey kept her perfect professional record and aura of invincibility intact with tonight’s slick submission win. In the co-main event, a potential future title challenger, Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm, made a successful UFC debut with a close decision win over Raquel “Rocky” Pennington.

UFC President Dana White announced today on Instagram that the women’s bantamweight title fight between champ “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (10-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) and “Alpha” Cat Zingano (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC), previously scheduled for UFC 182 in Las Vegas, has been moved to UFC 184 on February 28 at the Los Angeles Staples Center.

The Rousey-Zingano title bout now serves as co-main event to the middleweight title fight between champion Chris Weidman (12-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) and challenger Vitor Belfort (24-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC).

Finally, “Alpha” Cat Zingano (9-0, 2-0 UFC) and bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (10-0, 4-0 UFC) will meet inside the Octagon. The bout is set for January 3rd and will serve as the co-main event at UFC 182: “Jones vs Cormier” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After defeating Miesha Tate via TKO in April 2013, Zingano was set to coach opposite Rousey in ‘The Ultimate Fighter 18’, however, she was forced to withdraw from the show due to a serious knee injury. Personal tragedy would also keep Zingano sidelined until her return last month at UFC 178 where she reclaimed her number-one contender status via a come from behind TKO victory over Amanda Nunes.

Rousey has successfully defended her UFC championship four times, defeating Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann and most recently Alexis Davis via KO in just 16 seconds at UFC 175 in July. In her 10 victories, only Tate has made it past the first round, succumbing in round three to an armbar.

Once the bout had been announced, Rousey took to Instagram:
“Every ounce of respect I have for her is going to be poured into the effort to end her undefeated streak. Real champions don’t want belts, they want to test themselves against the best the world has to offer. On Jan 3rd two champions will be fighting and I’m going to show Cat what the best in the world is. I genuinely hope that Cat, the fans, and I all walk away unscathed and fulfilled that night. But fights are chaotic – you never know. 😉 I won’t say “good luck” but rather “good skill” to Cat. Get ready for the fight of your life.”

MMARising.com – UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey wasted absolutely no time in securing her latest highlight-reel victory tonight at UFC 175: “Weidman vs Machida” in Las Vegas, Nevada. Rousey retained her UFC title by knocking out Alexis “Ally-Gator” Davis in a mere 16 seconds.

Just as she did against past opponents Sarah Kaufman and Sara McMann, Rousey prevented Davis from getting anything going right from the outset of the fight. She threw the challenger on her head and unloaded with punches on the ground until the brief bout was waved off just as quickly as it began.

Rousey (10-0-0) engaged in an early exchange of punches with Davis (16-6-0) as round one began and Davis landed two stiff jabs. That was the extent of her offence, however, as Rousey cracked her with a big right hook and a knee. Davis appeared to be stunned by the strikes and Rousey used one of her signature judo throws – a slightly modified kubi nage – to dump Davis on her head. From the scarf hold position, Rousey then landed a series of unanswered punches to Davis’s face until referee Yves Lavigne jumped in to rescue the barely conscious Canadian.

Tonight’s swift and dominant win again reaffirmed that Rousey is MMA’s premier female competitor and it appears less and less likely that she will be relinquishing her UFC title at any point in the near future. Following her victory, Rousey was asked whether she would be able to compete again at UFC 176 on August 2nd, but a hand injury suffered tonight required stitches and Rousey will not be ready in time.

Leading into the title tilt, Davis was seen as a formidable challenger for Rousey on the ground due to her jiu-jitsu pedigree, but Rousey ensured that she would not have to contend with Davis’s grappling abilities by dispatching the Canadian standout in a matter of seconds.

tate-vs-rousey

UFC Press Release – As taping of The Ultimate Fighter 18 began on Tuesday, UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey got a big surprise in the form of her opposing coach: former opponent and long-time rival Miesha Tate.

Rousey had been expected to coach the season against Cat Zingano, who earned the honor by defeating Tate at the TUF 17 Finale on April 13.

But Zingano was injured during training, forcing TUF 18 to call up a new coach, which was revealed to cast members and Rousey alike earlier today.

“Everyone said an Ultimate Fighter between me and Miesha would be the best,” said Rousey to reporter Kevin Iole. “For some reason, I think me and Miesha are intertwined in fate like Ali and Frazier.”

Rousey will now face Tate at the end of the season instead of Zingano in a bantamweight title match. The two first fought in March of 2012, with Rousey nabbing Tate’s Strikeforce title via first-round submission.
